In December 2020, the Cradle-to-Career Data System Workgroup submitted its first report to the Legislature, outlining a proposed plan intended to develop and establish for the first time in California a statewide longitudinal data system – a critical tool that would ensure existing education, financial aid, social service, and workforce information is fully leveraged to improve outcomes for all students from “cradle to career.”

For the second year in a row, the California EDGE Coalition was awarded a grant partnership for the Bay Area-based project, ReWork the Bay.
An updated Heroes Act proposal was released this week with a price tag of $2.2 trillion dollars (the original proposal was $3.4 trillion). As the Governor mentions in his statement, we have an October 15th budget trigger that if we don’t get federal aid, various budget cuts will be made.

Thank you to those who attended the Policy Forum on EDGE’s recent report, Competency-Based Education: A Strategy for Upskilling in California. The Forum featured a phenomenal panel of education experts to discuss the use of Competency-Based Education (CBE) as a tool to promote equity and economic mobility in California’s workforce.

A new policy brief released by the California EDGE Coalition examines the ways in which other states are now successfully employing competency-based approaches to teaching and learning which allow students to move flexibly – and often much more quickly – through an educational program that is designed to make sure they know and can do what is expected of graduates.
The 2019-20 Budget Bill funds the creation of a LONGITUDINAL DATA SYSTEM to inform the public and policymakers, make it easier for students and parents to navigate the educational pipeline, and close equity gaps in educational outcomes.
